Finishing 3D prints without losing the shape.
A calm cleanup pass can make a print feel considered. The trick is to remove the noise while leaving the original form in charge.
Finishing is less about chasing a flawless surface and more about deciding what deserves attention. Start with light, reversible work; save the dramatic moves for when the shape calls for them.
Inspect first
Turn the print in your hand and look at it from the distance where it will live. Mark only the seams, stray threads, and edges that interrupt the form. A quick inspection keeps you from sanding details that were doing useful work.
Clean up in passes
- Remove strings and supports with a suitable hand tool, keeping the cut close but controlled.
- Use a small file or fine abrasive only where the edge or seam needs it.
- Dust the part and look again before adding any coating or color.
Finish with restraint
If you are painting, priming, or sealing, test the process on a spare piece or hidden area first. Different materials and products behave differently; follow the product maker's instructions and allow each layer to cure as directed.
Keep a note of what worked. The next version will tell you more than a complicated checklist ever could.
